Keep Your Home Secure: Checking Alarm Batteries Before Your Holiday!

Peace of mind while you are away on holiday, is key to getting the break away that you need.

Here are our top tips for making sure that everything backup battery related is tested and checked off your worry list.

As the holidays approach, many of us look forward to relaxing getaways. However, before you pack your bags, it’s essential to ensure your home remains safe and secure while you’re away. One crucial step is checking all battery-powered systems, especially those related to security, and ensuring they have reliable backup power.

Why It’s Important?

Load-shedding, power outages, or extended blackouts can occur unexpectedly, leaving your home vulnerable if security systems lose power.

What to Check:

  1. Gate Motor Batteries

Your gate motor is your first line of defense. A failing battery can leave your gate stuck open, inviting potential intruders. A very basic test would be to switch off the power to the gate and open/close the gate at least 10 times. If the gate slows down severely, or cannot do 10 times, or the battery (if lead acid) is over two years old, replace it before leaving.

  2. Alarm System Backup

Your alarm is crucial in deterring burglars. Ensure the backup battery is fully charged and can keep the system running during outages. A very basic test would be to switch off the power to the alarm panel, then arm the alarm, and see if it can remain armed for 8-24hours depending on your requirement. You should also test the system to verify all sensors and sirens are working properly.

  3. Electric Fences

If you have an electric fence, check its battery and backup system. A functioning fence is a significant deterrent, but without power, it’s just another boundary. A very basic test would be to switch off the power to the electric fence, then arm the fence, and see if it can remain armed for 8-24hours depending on your requirement.

  4. CCTV and Wi-Fi Routers

Many modern CCTV systems rely on internet connectivity. Ensure both your CCTV system and your Wi-Fi router have backup power to stay online during blackouts.

  5. Other Battery-Powered Devices

Don’t forget smaller devices like automated garage doors, security lights, and smart home systems. A quick check can save you from headaches later.

Tips for Holiday Security

  • Invest in Quality Batteries: Cheap batteries might fail sooner. Opt for Red Pole Lithium batteries with a good track record.
  • Test Regularly: Check all systems a week before your trip to allow time for replacements or repairs.

Peace of Mind While You’re Away

Taking these precautions ensures your home remains secure, even during power outages. It also allows you to enjoy your holiday knowing you’ve done everything possible to protect your property.

Before heading out, spend a little time double-checking your security systems. It’s a small effort that delivers priceless peace of mind.

Safe travels!
